"Everything descends into chaos, but sometimes you need a little push."
Background[]
Gavus handed Eugene a gift—a finely embossed diary with a red cover. Eugene was surprised; he had once possessed a precious red diary, made of grass, wood, cotton and linen, a product of mortal craftsmanship. It had been filled with his adventures, but after losing it, he stopped recording anything.
"Now you can have a new diary. You don't have to come to me every night to tell me what happened," Gavus remarked.
Eugene nodded, but he still wanted to fill the new diary with his pas exploits. His more distant memories has faded, and his recent secluded life seemed too mundane. As he thought about it, it was only his unexpected encounter with Gavus that felt worth writing about.
Their meeting had stemmed from a misunderstanding—the righteous Celestial mistook Eugene as an ally of the Hypogean who had seized the divine weapons.
Eugene cherished the novelty of it all, which broke the monotony of his life, but that didn't mean he could accept being forced to travel with a Celestial—his sworn enemy. Still, he valued his life more. After failing to escape, the Pigeonhead bound them together with the Scales of Benevolence.
He could only begrudgingly accompany Gavus in reclaiming the divine weapons. At a critical moment, he even saved Gavus from a Hypogean's blade.
However, along with the box containing the "divine weapon", they fell off a cliff into the abyss. Adding to their misfortune, the cries of an infant echoed from inside the box.
Eugene had seen many strange sights in his time, but now he was bewildered. "The divine weapons you were fighting over—are these two little brats?"
Yet, these siblings from an era akin to the divine indeed wielded power capable of reshaping the world. This attracted the attention of both the Hypogeans and the deities on the mountaintops, who vied to control them and alter the wold's fate.
Initially burdened by the role of caretaker for the two children, Eugene found himself in odd predicaments. Whether it was allowing the little girl to munch on spiders, accidentally leaving the silent boy too close to the fire until he was engulfed in flames, or even taking turns catching and playing with the two, Eugene's actions drew icy glares from Gavus.
"Do you even [know] how to take care of children?" Gavus questioned.
"If my methods bother you so much, you can ask me to leave," Eugene retorted. "Can't you see that little girl nearly pulled out all my hair?"
Unfortunately, the Scales of Benevolence that bound them together was damaged during the struggle for the divine weapons. Until it was fixed, they were stuck together. Despite winning more than a few verbal battles against Gavus, Eugene didn't enjoy their predicament.
At that time, in his journal, Eugene depicted Gavus as his sworn enemy, someone obliterating his freedom and the dignity of the Hypogeans, whose value lay in embracing death, allowing everything to return to nothingness. Yet later, Gavus fulfilled this very thing on his behalf. In Eugene's heart, the rigid Celestial only made him yearn more for chaos every day.
Perhaps it was Gavus' influence, or perhaps he shed his own prejudices. Nonetheless, Eugene grew closer to the little devils. He became dedicated to caring for them. Even after Gavus repaired the Scales of Benevolence, severing the spell that bound their lives together, Eugene quickly returned after brief absences.
Despite his stiff demeanor, Eugene had to admit that Gavus was becoming more agreeable to him. Instead of constantly being at odds, they started to become comrades.
The two children laughed and cried, and they were noisy and bothersome. But Eugene didn't want to see these troublesome little devils be turned into killing machines, and Gavus staunchly refused to let living beings be used as weapons.
During their time together, their fates became inexplicably intertwined.
However, the factions pursuing the divine weapons never relented.
During their escape, Eugene had warned Gavus that living in the mortal world wasn't a simple matter, but Gavus was far from prepared.
The Celestial and Hypogean had never had to worry about food and drink, but the two children were different. Since their days in the Cradle of Truth, they had relied on meager sustenance. Now, with their dwindling supplies, if they didn't find something soon, the two children would go hungry.
Initially, Eugene didn't care much. He claimed to have seen starving mortals scavenging from piles of corpses, indicating the little devils could resort to eating roots if they grew too hungry. But the righteous Gavus refused to hear such words. He scolded Eugene, yet he too was unable to come up with a solution.
